The Game farm is situated between Grahamstown and Bathurst, in the Eastern Cape.
The 5572 ha game farm is fully game fenced into two portions (783ha and 4789ha) and borders along the Fish River (4.5km river frontage) as well as the smaller Coombs and Kap Rivers.
Vegetation; Albany Subtropical Bushveld, with portions of grassland on the mountain ridges. The mass of indigenous mammal fauna occurring in the Valley thicket (especially spekboom) exceeds that of even the most productive of Africa’s tropical savannas. This feature is a consequence of the thicket’s unusually high mass of accessible and palatable browse, which in turn is fostered by its organically enriched micro-environment. Euphorbias, milkwood, coral trees, date palms, tar wood, chestnut, yellow wood, acacias, and wild fig
trees etc. as well as cycads and a large variety of Eastern Cape herbs, aloes and wildflowers are in abundance – therefore aptly named by environmentalists as “East of Eden.” Mountains and gorges with exceptionally beautiful views which can be accessed through a network of roads spread across the farm. Excellent gravel road from main road to main house (±5km) has been re-built, and graveled.
Water Distribution
Water is well spread across the farm, with 25 water troughs,17 Boreholes (of which 10 are equipped with solar panels and 5 with Eskom power.) As well as numerous gravel dams spread over the farm. Water is stored in 9 x 30 000 lt. Zinc reservoirs and 1 x 127 000 lt.
Rainfall
Average of ±550mm/year rainfall, Summers are mild to hot during January and February. Winters are very mild (coastal climate) with little to no frost.
A remarkable feature of thicket’s flora is that such an extraordinary high diversity of species and animal bulk can be supported at the fairly low rainfall.
